Any suggestions on a source for a wheel/pedestal for a 1984 Hunter 37 would be greatly appreciated. You may email me at stu@upthecreek.com, you may call me at my CPA firm at 800 886-3269 or my cell phone 804 512-1375. Many thanks! Stu Wallace

Edson

Its a standard Edson pedestal - should be able to order parts or the whole thing. See link below...

Edson?

Are you sure Jim? I know the early years like my 1979 were Edson but not sure about 1984. When I wrote to Edson for their catalog I sent the year and model of my Hunter. They included a couple of Xerox copies of the H37C installation. It was a diagram complete with all the current part numbers for all the pieces-parts. But there have been some years with Merriman and now Whitlock systems.

How about a used one?

Stu, Give Ann a call at Snug Harbor Boat Brokers 770-831-0403. They recently opened a consignment shop and she has a pedastal in there. I think it was around $700.00 might be negotiable. PAt McCartin 1979/80 H30 "Therapy" Lake LAnier, GA

Why am I replacing the Pedestal?

Steve, My existing pedestal is falling apart at the base. The aluminum is crumbling from electrolisys (sp?) I believe. At any rate, it is still stable, but I don't know if it will last another year. Plus I have some new electronics that I would like install at the same time. Stu

Thanks, Jim!

I will check out the site and let everyone know how it turns out. Stu

Which mfg. do you have?

Stu: Do you know if you have a Merriman Y/S or a Edson unit. The reason I am asking is that you will probably need to change all of the steering under the cockpit if you change brands.

Brand of Pedestal

Steve, I checked it out today, the nut on the wheel says Yachting Specialties, so I am guessing it is the Merriman. I wonder if they are still around to help out? Or if should I just concentrate on a used one, in your opinion?

Edson pedestal corrosion on Legend 43

Our 1991 Hunter Legend 43 "Rivendel II" also has an Edson pedestal. This pedestal already showed serious aluminum corrosion within the very first few years after we took delivery of HER (sic) and threatened the integrity of the entire wheel steering system since the corrosion especially attacked the aluminum around the base of the bronze pulleys over which the steering cables to the rudder quadrant are being led. By using large ss washers under the ss bolts attaching the base flanges of the 2 bronze pulleys to the aluminum pedestal base and liberally applying heavy grease around the whole construction we were able to slow the corrosion effects down for a full decade. Just this spring ,however, the French yard in Port Vila where "Rivendel II" has been dry-berthed has rebuilt the system after the process slowly continued and we no longer trusted the pulley system. When we first discovered the corrosion problem in 1992 or 1993 the process had already gone too far to try and undertake a proper insulation of the different metals with polymeric washers and sleaves. So, we just took the abovementioned measures in the expectation that the entire system would have to be rebuilt in another 2 or 3 years, at most. I am submitting this post -- although not necessarily applicable to the H 37 cutter -- for the following reasons: (1) pedestal corrosion may be more prevalent than many of us think; if there are dissimilar metals attached to the aluminum base check everything carefully at the beginning of the season (if not more frequently); and (2) that our stopgap measures held that long would appear to be a testimony to the effectiveness of using a good quality wagon grease to keep water and oxygen away from the process (in fact, we have always applied that type of grease liberally to the cables and quadrant as well). Sort of what I suspected.

Stu: This is what I had suspected. Hunter was using Edson on their earlier boats and then switched over to Merriman. Then they went back to Edson. I think you are looking a a big price tag for a complete steering system. You will need everything from a wheel to the quadrant. I would look around for a used Merriman unit first. You could also take the part that is wasting away to a machine shop and see if they can do something for you. If they could make the part, you can then take it and have it powder coated. Hopefully you will be able to find a used unit and just replace the needed parts. You may be able to sell the spare parts and get back some of your investment too.

Stu, Done That with Merriman on my 84 37C

Stu, I have the Merriman Y/S pedistal on my 84 37C, also. It also became very corroded at the base. I replaced it in April of 1999. At that time I went to Doc Freemans, in Seattle (see link), and they told me that Merriman had gone out of business, but they had bought up all of their remaining stock, which included a/some pedistal(s). At that time, the person I talked to was Lowry Chamberman. He was the only one there that knew very much about the Merriman stock that they had purchased and, unfortunately, I don't think he works there anymore. But you can give them a try. You may have to be persistant because I'm sure they may try to plead ignorance at first. The pedistal I bought was unfinished and I had to take it to a local shop to get powder coated. After that, all went well. If you need them, I can fax you the complete set of installation instructions and parts list.

Doc Freeman's

I checked with Doc Freeman's and spoke with a very knowledgeble gentleman that knew all about Merriman and the pedestals they had purchased. Apparently they sold them all. A new Edson base and engine control module runs approx $800 and some change. The holes in the base are a bit differently spaced on the Edson, but the spacing was close enough so as to minimize the need for drilling new holes in the deck. I was told I could use all other components of the steering system. I have since spoken with two of my clients, one is in the metal fabrication business and the other does wonderful fiberglass work. Both are to get back with me shortly with their ideas and costs for replacing the base. Has anyone else done their own fabrication for replacement of the base?

Bob, Could you fax me that stuff?

Bob, the parts list and installation instructions would be a great help to me. If you don't mind, please fax to (804) 776-6014. Thanks!
