I purchased a 1983 Hunter 22 and the upper and lower shroud lines are much longer than they should be. Can anyone verify the correct length of the shrouds I need for this boat. I have been unable to find the information I need online.

That seems really odd. Do you have the original mast? If so, then the shrouds could not possibly be too long unless the previous owner never sailed the boat. Have you stepped the mast?

Can you take pictures and post? I think you will get better advice if we can see what your issues are. Unless you don't have the original mast and then ... yeah...

BTW: I have a mast and all of the standing rigging from a Macgregor 21. A friend parted this boat out and stored it in my yard. Then moved away and left me with bits and pieces. You are kind of far way to take a look but I might be able to help you out once you get measurements and if the parts fit.

Good luck,
r

How much too long? There's something wrong. If the boat fit together when it was sold to you and it doesn't now, there's a problem.

After doing some searching I was able to find a description of what the lines should be I am going to check the lines against the specs I found. The turn buckles are bottomed out and the lines are still loose to the point that the tension cannot be measured. The forestay and aftstay seem to be the correct length with a reasonable amount of adjustment leftover. You could still sail it with the lines as-is I just wouldn't feel comfortable in moderate to heavy winds.

That's why I'm asking how much too long. If the turnbuckles are maxed out, and the rig is too slack, the first thing I would look at is the mast step. In one way or another it may be sinking. And we still don't know while you were shopping the boat if the condition of a loose rig existed.

I believe the original standing rigging was made up by Seco South in Tampa area. Was the mast a Kenyon Isomat? If so, there are sources for parts for that but not sure if you can see them under the Charleston Spar and the apparent company now located in Charlotte, NC

Shemandr might be onto something. Is your compression post still in place?
