I am new to sailing and purchased a 1983 Hunter 25. :) I just finished the ASA Keel Boat course and learned to sail on a Cat 22 and need help understanding how my boom works.

It has a mid-boom main sheet along a line running on each side inside the boom with pulleys for these lines at the end of the boom and by the gooseneck are levers that lock closed on the lines. There is an adjustable topping lift at the end of the boom. There is also a cleat on the center line of the mast below the boom's gooseneck.

I do not see a boom vang like the Cat 22, but from searching this site I think it did not come with one nor needs one to sail because of the mid-boom main sheet. I also do not see a downhaul by the goose neck, nor a stop for the boom's gooseneck to rest on when the sail is lowered, again like the Cat 22. Are the two lines running inside the boom a downhaul system and maybe a reefing system of some sort? What is the cleat for below the gooseneck?

Any help or information would be appreciated.

Are you saying that the boat is not rigged? Then I can see how you might be confused comparing it to a C-22 which I used to have. The internal lines of a Kenyon boom(yours) are for reefing the main. The cleat under the gooseneck is probably for a cunningham(downhaul) tie off. As I recall the H25 mainsheet was end-boom with the traveler on the bridgedeck(exactly like my H37C). I have seen one or two where the owner installed a traveler forward of the companionway. Here is a 1982 H25 and you can clearly see the traveler: http://www.sailingtexas.com/shunter25i.html . It is possible that in 1983 they moved it.

The mainsheet is attached to the boom about 18" from the stern end and the traveler located directly below it. The traveler track is between the cockpit and the companionway. I went to Rig Right and found some information on the boom. It has 2 internal reefing lines and an outhaul inside the middle of the boom. The goosenect is attached via a track and slide mechanism. I could not find anything on a downhaul for this boom / mast combination and I am still looking. Attached are pictures of the mainsheet location and the gooseneck / mast connnection. At this point I think the gooseneck locks in place so there is no need for a downhaul. I am still investigating and trying to figure out how to post the pics.
