O'day 34

I purchased a O'day 34 in Feb 2001 and found this boat to be well worth the money. Was sailing a Catalina 25 and was looking at both Catlaina and Hunter class boats. One of the local Marina's used to be a dealer for O'day and still to this day maintains them, in talking to them they highly recomended over the Hunter, and the Catalinas were over my budget. Overall I am very happy with my choice.

Good Old ODay

I own a 1982 ODay 34. It will never be confused with a Bristol, etc. but I have found this boat to be very comfortable and fairly well put together. My partner and I recently looked at a Sabre 34 and were not impressed with the quality of construction of the interior as compared to our boat. I personally feel that it is a little nicer than the Hunter or the Catalina. My one note is that the older (197? to mid 1980's are the best of the ODays. They are the boats designed by Hunt and made before the class of boats with 3 number designations, 272,302,322, etc. The 28,30 and the 34 are very much alike and are very good values in the used boat market. The 32 and the 37 are also in this class but are aft cabin boats and have a different following. Good luck JB

OD34

I own an '83 OD34. I bought it in '90 and have been very happy with the boat. No hull problems, deck had a lot of voids which were easily found and filled and you should check. I have done LOTS of improvements and upgrades and probably would not be nearly as happy without them - new sails (key to any boat), new roller furling, 'real' traveler, larger wheel, besides electronics, etc. I threw out the carpet and put in teak and holly. The engine, 25hp Universal 3 cylinder, has run just fine and I have had no significant problems. Layout, especially the head and vee berth arrangement, is very nice for cruising. Sails very well - I do some racing and have held my own - good sails are key here. Fundamentally I think you will be very happy with the boat. Any 19 year old boat is really subject to how it's been cared for though, so look carefully.
