A nice boat. Went and looked at one in my marina. Nothing special on this boat. Nice bright work that is completely covered. Has what looks like a brand new dodger and bimini. Has radar and the usual pedestal mounted electronics.

Asking price is $45,900.00. (Hope the owner isn't on this board. LOL). I checked Nada and found the average price to be $26,695 with all the listed amenities. Now I know the boat must be pulled and surveyed. I would ne dumb not to do this. But the price differential is a little out of line. I heard from the owner he is upgrading to a Hunter 42.

I know what I want to offer and it is above the average resale price but far below the asking price. My base is 30% below asking which is about what I would offer plus one year slip fee. That is normal here to charge an extra 10~15k for the slip (high demand, long wait list).

Any thoughts from you Hunter owners, is this a good vessel for that year? Or was this year a lemon year?

Thanks guys...

There were no lemon Cherubini Hunters! :) But definitely overpriced. You said it, the survey is key to the negotiations. In addition to NADA take a look at YachtWorld, range of 1980-1984 for both the 36 and the 37C(even though the 36 was only made 80-82). This will give you a better idea I think.

Ed, isn't there another site that one can get used boat prices? I can't remember the name right now but I am sure there was. The used boat prices on that site I seem to recall to be higher. I did check Yachtworld and there are no '82 H36 boats other than the one I was looking at. Didn't check other years though. Thanks, I check that now.

Way overpriced for that age boat, particulary in this economy. I'd say 40% below his asking.

Yeah, definitely base you offer on what other comparable ones are going for. People often sink money into things (electronics, canvas, etc) but you just don't get a 1-for-1 return in the overall boat value. Or maybe the seller has just had the boat for a long time and hasn't researched what it's currently worth. Since you're passing it's a moot point this time, but just wanted to offer some thoughts.

The Cherubini Hunter 36's are very nice boats. But almost always they sell for much less than other 36 footer production boats made by other companies. Here is a link to a 1980 Hunter 36 in the San Francisco area @ $21,000. One never knows the exact condition until looking/surveying, but it seems that much has been done over the last several years and that the boat will be very seaworthy.
