Tom, I bought my 38 about two years ago in Dana Point, Hassle is her name, you may have seen us around Newport Beach CA. When we did the out of water survey there was blistering on the hull and I had to have that addressed. I was told that there had been a major hull repair a few years prior, stipped and re done so??? I believe it's a typical problem with the 38 hulls. Yes, you can convert to a tiller if you wish, I think most were made with a tiller, Clark Baxter in Dana Point (Hooligan) has a tiller, you can probably find a e mail address or telephone number through PHRF's website. Yes the Universal is noisy to say the least. We are strongly considering purchasing a insulation kit to cut down on the noise. As you know, ther is not much room in that engine compartment so it will be tricky to install it. LOL We race in several off shore races each year. The 38 is a great racer and crusier. Although it may not have some of the creature comforts some people want it's a great cruiser for two the three couples or a bunch of grandkids. If you have any questions give me a call at 909-383-8565. Larry
