1981 Mariner

Hi- Just bought a 1981 Oday (Spindrift) Mariner. Got it a guys yard with a For Sale sign on the trailer winch. Called him in Western Mass. and started the paper work yesterday. Have been on this forum several times about my 1969 Daysailer and thought it was sold thru the classied here. Turned out to be a jerk who kept playing me for a new offer. Now have 2 Odays!!! Will sell the daysailer in the spring I hope. Moved up to gain self bailing, 41/2HP with a 6 gal. tank, and a little more room in the cockpit. Bass River is a strong current and my old 3.3 was a 25+ minutes to the sound. Plus no F-N-R for getting away from my dock and power boat. Looking forward to sailing a Mariner in 2006. Also may make a topping lift this winter, thanks to previous forums and Roger Conrad in Manitoba. Hi Rog!!!!

Now that you are potentially leaving us, and moving on to a Mariner, you will want to check out their forum.http://usmariner.org/phpBB2/I was looking lovingly at the Mariner 2+2 a couple of years ago, but there didn't appear to be any around here, and the cost and logistics of getting one up here from the states, was a bit much. Especially, when I really wanted to check the state of the wooden stringers before buying. That seems to be a bit of a design flaw with them. They tend to rot with age.Anyhow, good luck with your mariner. I am sure you will enjoy it as much if not more than a daysailer... Sitting headroom, increased storage, and same great design and sailing characteristics.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Rog. This is a 1981 and built by Spindrift, I guess, with the Oday hull. Really needed more power but mostly a larger gas capacity! Just discoverewd 2 sets of sails, mains and jibs. Plus sail cover for main and it appears to be a bag for the jib to leave in place at the base of front stay. Would this be the case? Has velco closers on it but is a bag type shape. I remembered your discussion of stringers and bought it as was as it was too good to pass up (I hope!!!). Will still be on this site as I really enjoy the chatter on it even if it is a 25 or bigger boat. I have checked the Mariner site and finally got a look at the Gloucester 19 that was on this site. Nice boat but not as much cockpit area, plus I would not insult the owner with a low offer as I have experienced on my daysailer (in former forum)!
