Wife and I are possibly interested in either a Tayana or Mariner ketch.
Seems there is little to no review about these sailboats.
Your thoughts are appreciated in advance.
Frank.

There were not a great many built and that quite awhile ago. See if you can find reviews of a 1956 packard or a 1952 Nash Ambassador.
If you like the shape and layout of the boat and a survey tells you that it is sound and a fair price then buy it.

"There were not a great many built and that quite awhile ago." YES, 1981 WAS QUITE AWHILE AGO. "See if you can find reviews of a 1956 packard or a 1952 Nash Ambassador. NO, ROSS, A 1981 TAYANA OR MARINER KETCH, NOT A 1956 PACKARD OR A 1952 NASH AMBASSADOR; YOU MUST HAVE MIXED UP YOUR REPLYS TO TWO DIFFERENT POSTS. FYI, YOUR SUGGESTIONS BOTH DISPLACE WATER, BUT DON'T SAIL WELL.
"If you like the shape and layout of the boat and a survey tells you that it is sound and a fair price then buy it." GOOD ADVICE. HOW MANY BOATS DID YOU HAVE TO BUY BEFORE YOU LEARNED THIS TRUTH?

Sarcastic comments are like pee, aim in the wrong direction and you will draw sparks.
But then again, There are three kinds of men: The ones that learn by reading. The few who learn by observation. The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.

There was no sarcasm involved in my reply. when a product becomes old people lose interest in it. You can find many references to a '57 chevy because they still have a cult following. I chose the two auto makes because not many were built and I don't think that I have ever see one that had been restored.
I sturdied boats design for five years before I went buying and bought the boat I have now nearly 21 years ago. That was my first boat.

Some Issues

I am old enough to know these boats when they were new and had friends owning both. The older Tayana was probably a better sailor than the Mariner, but both will do a lot of motoring when winds lighten and neither will point particularly high, but you likely know that already. At these ages, it's all about maintenance, upgrades and restorations. Both are character boats that look a million when well maintained or upgraded and both will sail OK with a good set of reasonably new sails. There is an endless list of things to be careful of which is kind of a waste of time since every boat will be very individual. Of course, decks and deckhouses and chainplates were troublesome. Good luck!
