Need to service all the “Original Equipment” probably never been serviced Lewmar winches on my “New to Me” 1980 Catalina 30 MK2. I’ve spent several hours scouring the net, but can’t see to find any information on Lewmar winches that old. A parts diagram would be of great help.

I would try googling the specific model of the winch.... otherwise, go ahead and disassemble the winch after reading a basic service manual. Your winch is probably pretty similar to this one.

The winch interiors are pretty much the same, it's the drum removal process that may vary, i.e. circlip or cap bolts... so be very careful, keep the parts in order as you remove so you can remember how they go back together. I really believe that removing the winch from boat is the best way for a major overhaul, otherwise, cut a hole in a box to place over the winch so you don't lose any precious parts.

Basic replacement parts like pawls and pawl springs are somewhat interchangeable...so the small kits you find today will often work with the older winches. If it's something major, like a bearing...... different story. Good luck.

Joe's right. Some of us even had to dissemble our winches before the internet. In my case, some have suggested I did mine even before they invented books! :) Certainly before digital cameras, so I drew a sketch of what I saw and kept notes. I also recognized that I had four winches, two small, two large, but all four were two speed, and I figured if I couldn't figure it out, I was pretty dumb.

Make sure you get some kerosene to clean stuff with, and don't grease the pawls.

This is one of those "it's a lot easier once you get into it" boat projects. Far easier than redoing an electrical system, for example.

Good luck.

I found good service manuals at Lewmar.com they had good pictures and pretty much took it down to the Dick and Jane level I needed. I have an '89 25 and the guts look exactly like what the book showed. If yours are anything like my simple single speed winches, cut a whole in the bottom of a shoe box to put around them to catch any falling pieces and then just take them apart. They aren't that complicated. Good luck.
