Just took ownership of a 1980 Hunter 27. The fuel supply tap inside the cabin (in the locker below the chart table) is just a 90-degree metal rod. Nothing that says "Off" or "On" and though I found the instruction manual on here for the Renault Coach 8 engine

http://sbo.sailboatowners.com/downloads/Hunter_gen_29212423.pdf

It only makes mention of the term, not where it is located or how to know if it is open or closed. Would like to label it for my wife, but not sure what is on and what is off.

Help!

Are you talking about the fuel shutoff valve from tank to engine? Usually when the handle is parallel to the fuel line it means it is open but when the handle is perpendicular to the line it means it is shut.

First off ..................... welcome to the site.

This is a little difficult to decipher without a picture of the offending part.

I presume you mean the shut off "valve" when you refer to the fuel supply "tap". This is probably a ball valve with a bar shaped handle. When the handle is parallel to the valve, the valve is open. It's closed when at right angles to the valve.

Let me know if this is not the case and we'll have another go at it.

Need to take a photo

My apologies for not getting a photo, but I will next time I'm at the boat.

It is odd and not as much between the fuel tank and engine, but on the opposite side of the galley in a locker. Odd. Previous owner said it is like the key to turn on the engine.

Now you've piqued my curiosity .

Being on the opposite side of the galley, it may not be the fuel shut off valve.

We'll be waiting for the photo. First one to successfully guess what it is wins the usual first prize around here.

Okay, made it back up to the boat and took a video of this switch the PO told me needed to be turned on in order to start the engine.

It is in the cabinet below the chart table. When vertical, it seems to be engaged (on perhaps) and when it is perpendicular you can pull it right out so I believe that is off.

I did start the engine with it in the vertical position, so that is the on position.

But what is the name of this? Can't find it in any of the old Hunter 27 owner manuals.

Without being there, I can honestly say "dunno". Will the engine start and run with the lever in both the vertical and horizontal position ?

Any chance of seeing behind the wooden panel to see just what is being controlled ?

Looks like a remote choke to prime the engine.
