1980 Hunter 37 C Saugerties
Hi there,
Considering an H37 as a move up from my 1980 H30. Going for a look at the boat and will decide whether or not to bring my surveyor. Any thoughts on the boat?

Go look at the boat yourself. If it "looks" like a keeper, make your offer and get a survey.

Still the best buy in a cruising boat

Since you already own a Cherubini Hunter, you should take a careful look yourself before hiring a surveyor. Many of the common defects you can spot. I am a surveyor and I have owned my 1980 37C for 16 years and if not for health reasons would not sell it for anything else in its range. Check the forum archives, there is great information there. Personally I much prefer the 5'1" keel to the 4' stiffer and points better but it depends where you sail.

A good HC37 is a great boat, we love ours, and eventually hope to go coastal cruising in her. It is a huge step up from our previous swing keel 23 foot Clipper Marine.

There is no doubt though, that if proper upkeep has not been done, then in 30 years a lot of problems will have built up. We have probably spent as much again as the boat originally cost ($27,000) and we did not have any major structural defects. It all went on sails, canvas projects, engine mounts, domestic water, head, propeller upgrades, roller furling, portlights, rigging renewal, new dodger and and and......

We probably have a lot of mutual friends, I am in keyport and have been wintering in Haverstraw for the last 20 yrs, they usually stick me in the north yard, next to where Steve Turek was on the hard. I know Mark, and the fella I knew best was Gordon, actually we all grew up together and went to school in bergenfield, small world. Right now I am almost directly across from haverstraw at viking marina in verplanck NY.... Red

I did exactly what you are describing. Even though I was happy with my 79' H30, trading up to the H37c was a good choice for me. Now I really feel "at home". Some of the people on this site have shown a few upgrades that I am incorperating into her refit before I shove off. The surveyer missed a few things that costed me time & money, but never caused me any doubts. All Smiles !!

Does anybody know anything about a blue H37C sitting at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron? I heard a rumor that one is there. Don't ask me how I know it is hull #135. I called about it and a very nice lady said she would have the manager call me if he knew anything. I was thinking about Rick and his need for a mast. Stay tuned.

The light blue H37c at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron was originally Minerva. I heard that the boar is for sale cheap. I have been told that 10K would buy it. No engine, no sails, interior gutted.

So, was that #135 with a 'B' or a 'C' at the end? ...I'm always data mining! :D

I have owned and sailed a Hunter 37 for 16 years. This for me and my wife has been a great boat. It performs well and in difficult seas is a safe boat...

Most of our sailing has been in the Northern Channel islands off the Southern California Coast. We have done a lot of anchoring. We have encountered lots of storms...

I highly recommend this boat.

Thanks Blaise, should have known you would know. I hope you are right about that price. I'll bug the Squadron manager for the answers. It is a fin keel boat and the exterior looks good from the ground.

Yea, I'll fall right in line behind everyone else here and say, I've had a blast with mine. Bought it about 9 years ago, replaces almost everything at least once, and I'm just about ready to head south. Every truely "sailboat" person I've met that actually knew what they were talking about (between several cities in Fl), and they all give the H37C a great review.
