Recently traded for 1979 27 foot Hunter. There is no boom vang. Has mid boom traveler. Is this standard factoryrig or has it benn changed through the years?

Add the vang

I haven't owned a 27, but I've seen several. As I recall, if you're on a down wind run and want to keep the sail off the rigging, you'll need to pull the boom down. You won't be able to do that from the travelor alone as it will begin to pull the boom back toward center. The vang is the appropriate alternative. A second alternative would be rig a preventor, but your vang could work for both. Jim

Boom Vang

I have a '79 Hunter 27 and my main sheet was originaly at the end of the boom with a traveler across the rear of the cockpit. I moved it forward so I could fit a bimini. Adding a boom vang with the main sheet over the companionway is almost a necessity with this arangement for any decent sail shape downwind. Wayne

Just added a vang

I added a straightforward, pulley leveraged vang to my h27 this summer. It has a snap shackle where it fastens to the U bracket at the foor of the mast, so that I can redeploy it as a preventer/vang at a forward hole on the rail at the edge of the deck. Quite happy with the set-up so far. (Didn't do any extended cruising after the mod.)
