oday 19 ri
I am looking at a 79 19 foot oday. Are there any issues with this boat/year? I searched through the forum and found a few complaints about leaks particularly around the center board... Are there more specific things I should look for? Note I am new to boats but have been restoring antique motorcycles for years...

Any guidance would be appreciated!

I'm assuming that you're referring to the little cabin sailboat on this site.
http://www.iheartodays.com/model_oday_19.html I've heard it referred to as the "Weekender". I really can't tell you much about this boat except that most of the guys on this forum who own them seem to like them. I personally believe that this boat can make an excellent trailer-sailer.
Also, if you need parts for this boat you can get them from Rudy at D&R Marine.

Good Luck!

Mike,

Are you looking at a Mariner 2+2 or the regular 19?

I have the Mariner, and it is a great little fast boat. Keel leaks are from the center board pivot bolt, and an easy fix. Parts are readily available from Rudy at DR Marine, http://www.drmarine.com/. The Mariner has a fully retractable centerboard, where the 19 has a center trunk, which sticks out from the bottom of the hull about 6 inches. You can beach the Mariner no problem.

This is an old manual I found on the Mariner. http://documents.clubexpress.com/do...kI5NPFXvqtrywefXKdwtBHwm+12wbhZImL2X7wC2uSFb5

A few points about the Mariner:

They are still made by Stuart marine, so it's a well proven design,
Light easy to tow, set up, get in the water sail, then take home again,
Ok to spend a night on with kid, or one other person.
No core fiberglass! Easy to repair.

I had a link to Nathan B. 's website, "the boat Orion". He has several write ups on some common fixes. Google it, very helpful, even though his boat is the older classic version of the Mariner.

Hope this persuades you to restore and preserve yet another great O'Day!

Mike,

The easiest way to tell an O'Day 19 (or 192) from a Mariner is the Mariner has a vertical transom. The O'Day 19 (and 192) transom is raked forward.

All models are about 19' long (but there is a slight model-to-model difference). Many Mariners are referred to as O'Day 19s.

Each model is a great choice. I had an O'Day 19 and enjoyed trailer sailing it. Launch it most anywhere, rigged within 30 minutes without rushing.

The O'Day (and Stuart) Rhodes 19's are also referred to as an O'Day 19 sometimes. Same hull as the Mariner, except with a cuddy cabin instead of a regular cabin.
