I rebuilt a 1974 O'day 27 in 2002 and it's to small for the family already! My next task is to rebuild a 1978 O'day 30. I would like some feed back as to how the boat handles and if you feel it was well built. The boat was land sunk and needs some major repair! The cabin sole was removed due to water damage and some other detailing work needs to be completed. I welcome any feed back about the O'day 30 1978 model

Hi, My Name is David, It sounds like you & I are in the same boat, i rebuilt a O'Day 25 that my family has outgrown.O'Day 30' ( just bought one ) The cabin roof skylites in the V-berth seem to be shot on most of the boats I looked at. as well as the one I bought. The stern pulpit rail does not have an opening to pass through. This makes it very awkward to go off the stern or get back in the boat. I'm going to add 2 Stanchions & clip a small opening that the ladder will fill. They resolved this problem on the "80" model. If your cabin furniture ( laminate type ) is sound but, ugly stick on teak my be an option for you. the materials are a little costly but it turns a complete cabinet redo into a doable and much less costly project.Cabin Soles are tough! the floor of most O'Days have rounded transitions. this makes for a slow job Fortunatly my boat's teak&holly Sole looked like new. Counter tops are likely to need a replacement. Corian Works great and the teak will re-atach well if you double the turndown thickness.I am curently reserching products to resurface the nonskid on deck. I don't care for the light blue color, and a poor repair was done in two spots. I have sailed several O'days They are great boats no mater what the weather. It's a shame they bombed in the eighties. If come up with solutions for any of the O'Day 30's ticks along the way , clue me in. It may save some space in my brain for the next thing. GOOD LUCK

I'm looking at a 1978 O'day 30, the cabin sole has been cut out and it's been out of the water for eight years. I would like to know your feeling about this boat. Is it worth fixing up, how does it handle, does it weather well, how does it sail? The hull look good and so does the top side,it's a deep keel boat that needs some major TLC.

Hi, Dave Thanks for your response! Your coment about the cabin sole is the issue, I have with this boat! The sole was cut out due to the plywood core going bad. I,ve talked to a few people about this issue and they tell me the boat will sail better if the floor is fix with extra rib's. This will keep tke boat from flexing as much and put more of the sail power into the boat. It sounds like your happy with the way your O'day handles! I would be greatful for any pointers that you can give me about repairing the cabin sole. Keep your sail full and have a great sailing season.
