Hello,

My shifter cable has worn out and I need a replacement. Does anybody know what model/length I need to replace it with? It's for a 1978 Hunter 30, with the Edson pedestal and Yanmar engine. I see forums recommending Teleflex 3300.

Thanks!

Got it fixed up. It's a 6' Telefex 33. Install as follows:

***Take Pictures and notes of takedown
***Take a rag and stuff it down the binnacle to prevent lost parts
***Maybe a can of raid would be good if you have any chance of vile bugs
***Work can easily be completed from top of binnacle and from battery side if side board is removed.
****It may be a good idea to put a large towel at the bottom of the post. This would catch all the debris and possibly maybe that screw, but as mentioned you don't need to remove the quadrant assembly or lower plate unless you used way too much tape or drank the beers too early.
****Don't lick old stamps on boats from the 70's. General caveat.

The cable used was a standard teleflex with threading. The existing fittings from the old cable will thread on to the new one very easily.

Remove Compass
Remove compass ring
remove grab rail
take pictures of everything
remove brass fitting from end of cable, lay everything out on the side in order.
when you thing you need to take apart the quadrant to get to the cable release, don't.
Pull up the yoke that holds the throttle and shifter cable to expose the cable clamp
remove the set screw and draw down on the cable, moving it out of the assembly.
add a strong string to the old one, then electrical tape the two cables together.
I put a string on the other cable and tied it to the bimini to guide it as I was alone
unhook the ring and pin from the engine side
remove the two screws on the engine side cable clamp beside the battery boxes
draw the cables down through the existing hole in the base of the binnacle.
unhook and rehook.
Take note of number of turns to remove old engine mount yoke and position on the shifter (top or bottom).
Fiddle back and forth with the proper position of hardware on either side of the cable mounts. This may save you time, but I ended up fiddling to get it aligned without spring in the shifter knob, proper alignment of that knob etc.
Based on this I didn't have to touch the quadrant. Thankfully.

It took my 2.5 hours to complete and only had one cd to listen to. Send kids and wives to the beach. May require a couple cans of beer and some light music. No candles.

Level of difficulty 4/10. Cost $44, plus $25 overnight air shipping.

Same Issue

I have a '83 Hunter 31 with cable issues. The transmission cable sheared inside the pedestal and needs replacing (the throttle cable is likely about to go as well). I've been searching for the past hour online trying to find what is the correct replacement and where to get it. Any help appreciated. Thanks

When I was down sailing the keys I like Mantos Marine, they had everything and the service was great. These teleflex cables are really common. Any boat place would have them, or availability to bring them in.

http://mattosmarine.com/ is awesome.
