Friends, does anybody out there have a tiller steering 78 hunter 27? The currently installed tiller is so long that it makes the cockpit virtually unusable for anyone except me. I was thinking of going shorter because apparently a wheel conversion would be like 2.5k. What is your tiller length? Is the rudder balanced on this model? What do we think?

The cockpit on tiller steered Cherubini h27s is larger and configured differently that their wheel steered counterpart. In essence you should have more room with the longer continuous benches and no helm seat. I do not think there is a correct length for the tiller as like most things in boating it would be a matter of preference. Maybe the PO lhad real long arms and liked to seat further up. The main factor in shortening the tiller would be rudder pressure. The shorter the tiller the more strength required to steer the boat. You can try placing masking tape at different intervals and steer the boat from each to see which length would suit your needs. Do bear in mind that at some point you may encounter sea conditions that may test your strength and stamina to steer so don't cut it to short.
