I have just been informed that my keel nuts are badly rusted. The bolts are also rusted, though not as badly. Why were these not stainless? I will try to get the nuts off, and redie and replace the nuts. But what are my other options. So far, there is no dropping of the keel and no leak. The keel is still tight, but I would like to fix asap. Looking for advice, Keir Hood

Its a common problem...

Click on the link below. It will take you to the C27 International Assoc. web page. If you scroll on down to 'keel bolts' there are a few good articles as to how to deal with the mild steel bolts and nuts. Also, a search for keel bolts in the archives here will probably yield a few hundred posts on the topic. Good luck!

Bolts, Shmolts . . .

Forget it, no keel has ever departed a C-27 on its own. (Well, so far anyway). And when folks do drop the keel for whatever reasons, even with the bolts removed, it takes hours of sledge hammering and wedging to get it off. If you’re still worried, drill and insert a few lag bolts into the top of the keel. Nick "Julia Bell" C-27, #86

Lag bolts

The recommended factory fix for this is to have 4 316SS lag bolts added to the keel. You can do this yourself (out of the water is what I'd recommend), and you can get the 10" bolts from Catalina. Give Catalina a call, and they'll fax you a copy of a drawing for the fix. But I agree with Nick, I wouldn't be very worried. Peter
