Looking at a 1977 O'Day 27 ft Sailboat, price is right, wonder what problem areas I need to be watching. Can I add Wheel steering to this boat? Thanks for your help.
edison makes a small sailboat wheel kit, about $800. if i remember right, but everybody has differing ideas about a wheel on this size boat, would recomend sailing with tiller first before making change. with so many boats lost in hurricanes last year, there should be lots of used equipment on market this spring/summer.
I bought one about five years ago & I really like it. There are times when i wish i had a wheel, although a tillerpilot (Simrad makes one) can take the edge off. The boat is fast and agile & if properly reefed, can handle some wind & waves. I like the atomic 4 engine, although most people would prefer diesel. Check the bulkheads for rot around the shrouds, particularly if they are covered with vinyl fabric. The boat is also reasonably roomy for cruising. I added shore power. Good luck
