1975 Catalina 27 Cockpit Through Hull?Bilge pump

Catalina 27 Redondo
Hi there
1.I just bought a 1975 Catalina 27.I have had to strip the boat and water blast it to clean it out.My last boat and first was a 1972 Catalina 27 but this configuration is very different. So water is not draining out of the exterior cockpit through and out the hull..it seems there is some piping leading somewhere but I cant figure out where it leads..so water is just sitting where the gasoline and motor goes. The marina diver said there were no holes in the back of the boat for water to drain.
2. I am installing a new bilge pump. Can"t do it myself as not sure how all my boat is rigged electrically yet..know anyone in Redondo who can install them and who is also good with electrics? It s my first boat starting from scratch.
3.I have a universal diesal engine..it doesnt work of course.Any thoughts? I cna find very little info about the 1975 online!

One maxim for bilge pump, "the smaller the boat, the larger the bilge pump as they will fill up faster". For the cockpit should have scuppers draining out the sides thru hoses and thru hulls above the waterline. Where do the gasoline and motor go? Something sounds not right. Any water that leaks or is directed to the inner hull should drain to the bilge. Bilge pumps are 12V with a (+) and (-) wires and can be installed directly to the battery(s) with a Fuse Holder and fuse in the (+) wire close to the battery and a float switch also in the (+) wire close to the pump itself. The discharge hose should lead to a thru-hull above the water line. A 500 GPH to 750 GPH pump should be adequate for the boat. Understand these pumps are convenience items and not safety items. Their real life performance is quite below the rated specifications (pumps are bench rated with minimum loads, add a real load, discharge hose length and heads and they will be close to 1/2 capacity. Electrical inefficiencies will push further down.)

The Catalina 27's with outboards that I recall had a engine mounted on the stern. I know there were some with inboards after the initial few years. (There were over 6,000 of them made! Pretty popular ;^))).

Can you take pictures of your "condition" in the "exterior cockpit"? Do you mean the main cockpit, or???

Pictures would help. The "well" on some Catalina 27's held the gas tank. Then the "hole" might be where the gas line led back to the engine? It's likely that wouldn't be in the bottom of the well to allow it drain.

The aft edge of the rudder is pretty far back near the end of the transom -- I just can't recall seeing a C 27 with one of those "wells" where the engine poked through directly into the water.

You're right. I was was thinking her boat was the well that I rigged an engine tilt line to. I did hers, but it was on the transom. Can't recall who had the boat with the well. "Memory" does not serve me too well, but at least the bartender gets it right:redface:
