I've been researching sailboats in the 20-23 foot size to upgrade to from my old Lido 14 boat. I got an email from someone that says they might sell their 22' Catalina 1971 model. Looking at weights of the boats, I see that the different years have different weights. Is this correct? I was looking around and see the 22 is anywhere between 1,800lbs up to about 2400lbs. The reason I'm asking, is that I have a V6 Ford Ranger 2WD truck that I'd be towing with, so I'm looking for something that wouldn't be too heavy to to with this truck. So...I was wondering if someone would know about what the weight of a '71 Catalina 22 is? Thanks, Tom Renton, WA

Try the C22 Association website

www.catalina22.org or the Index of Forums above. The C22 website is sure to have brochures listing the weights. To that you'd have to add the motor and stuff you put on board for trailering.

weight

Yeah, I saw that one site, but couldn't find any info on the '71 model. When looking at http://www.sailingtexas.com/scatalina22138.html this one was listed at 1,850lbs. Some of the other 70s models seemed lighter than the newer ones. Just trying to find the "official" weight of a 71 model, but come up with all kinds of different numbers. I just don't want to get too close to 3,000-lbs total since my truck is about 4,000-lbs. Tom

C 22 Weight

Tom: In my old technical manual, a guy named Dick King wrote in 1985/86..."My C-22 displaces about 2600 pounds, loaded with sails, outboard, and cooler. Add a 700 pound trailer....." Probably a good estimate for your purpose. Dick

That's more like what I was thinking for the weight of that boat. Size is ok, but I think it's a bit heavy for my little Ranger! I guess I should keep looking for a Mac 21/22. Although I'm wondering if the 21 is a little tight for overnight trips. I have had 3 emails from people who are trying to sell a 21, so I'm wondering if maybe I would just start with one of those, sail it a couple years, then upgrade to the next thing? Tom

book

A little confused now. I just looked at the boat listings in the back of the book "Your First Sailboat" (see - http://mhprofessional.com/product.php?isbn=0071422161&cat=132&promocode= ) and it listed the Catalina 22 at about 1850-lbs with 500 lb ballast. It didn't say anything about the year of that boat, so I'm not sure. Tom

C22 wt.

Tom: Recommend you check out the archives of this site, re/towing C22 etc. The party who sold me my 1974 C 22 several years ago had brought it to Utah from near Sacremento, CA with a Ford Explorer and he said it did just fine. I had a Ford 150 with a 6 cy. straight and it was a little underpowered for steep ramps and highways in the mountains. Now I have a Chev pickup with a 4.7 l. V-8 and it is about right. If you only used yours for near flat ground to and from a mild launch it might work fine, but I'd be concerned too if you want to tow around Washington state mountains. You might end up buying both a boat and a heavier tow vehicle. Stopping going down grade is also a critical factor! Dick

towing

Hi Dick, I don't plan on towing it far. I'm only about 1.5 miles from a boat launch on the south end of Lake Washington, so that is where I plan on starting trips from. My truck is the V6 3.0L model of the Ranger, so it's not small truck, but definately not a F-150 either. Tom
