Handling attributes Under power with installed Martec folding prop and a clean bottom the boat will do about 6.5 knots in flat water at about 3500 RPM. This prop is probably a bit small for the boat as the engine revs a little too quickly with it. It is fine for local daysailing and racing though and the reduced drag under sail is noticable. Perhaps a little more pitch would give a bit more thrust. The boat also has a 3 bladed fixed prop which gives more thrust and might be a better chioce if a lot of motersailing in rough conditions is expected. The boat is quite manouverable under power and will turn in about its own length. Backing up is also quite good but with the low aspect rudder and tiller one must use caution as the tiller can exert a lot of force. Under sail the boat is good performer in light air even with the 110% roller furling jib recently purchased. It is a stiff boat aboat boat can sail quite quickly this wayy nd with relatively high topsides it is almost impossible to put the toe rail under. Weather helm is dependent on heal angle. With the large, low aspect mainsail and small jib the best technique is to reef the main early to balance the boat. With one reef in the main and a full jib the boat starts to build weather helm at about 20 knots apparent and I would take the second reef in the main at 25 and roll up the jib to 100% at 30. this combination should be good upwind to 40 knots apparent. When racing I often keep full main and jib up to 25knots apparent upwind but at this point the main has to be luffed severely and this would not be desireable for cruising. The boat handles suprisingly well with just the roller furling jib set and this is truely the lazy man’s way to sail with almost no excuse to ever leave the cockpit. The boat is actually quite fast upwind with thyis setup and will do 6.5 knots in about 20 knots apparent. January / February Read articles in ‘Practical Sailor’, “This Old Boat’, andArticles On Line. Consulted with Boat Yards and other boaters who had done their own painting. I decided that I could get good results with a single part polyurethane paint and would be able to do all the work myself without help. Based on the recommendation of Practical Sailor magazine I decided on Pettit Easypoxy White for the topsides and deck with possibly a Mint green stripe. Based again on Practical Sailor’s recommendation and also on that of local painters I purchased a Porter Cable 330 Random orbital sander and a supply of hook and loop sand paper at a local woodworking tool supplier. By buying from an industrial supplier instead of a hardware store I was able to buy the paper in 50 sheet boxes insterad of 5 sheet packs at a considerable savings. Although the sander has a dust bag it is necessary to use a vacuum attachment If you really want dust free sanding, something I would recommend. Porter Cable sells a rather expensive rig with a hose and industrial vac but you should be able to rig up something with your own equipment. Because my boats previous paint job was in very poor condition I decided to sand down to the original gellcoat. I started sanding the topsides with 80 grit paper. This first sanding took approximately six 5 hour days. Boogiwacket painting Schedule(Actual work done) March 4/58 hrs. total Remove handrails and comings. WOW!

Wow! Would love to pick your brain sometime. We just bought a 36 in San Diego on the 21st of Dec and love it. It is a 1969 model and has traveled far. Just wanted tio say the work you've done is very impressive. Do you ever get down to San Dieg? My wife is up in San Mateo this week with her brother and I know they'd love to see your work if that is possible. jmac275@msn.com
