1967 23'2 fixed keel, thru hull rudder

I have a friend with a 1967 Tempest 23'2" that is a fixed keel with a thru hull rudder.He has lost the rudder and can't find anyone who can give him specs so he can have a replacement made. Is there anyone who has this same vessel or knows someone who has. Rudy Nickerson has never even seen one. Need help !! Please reply.

Rudy made my 25 replacement but at the time and since I recall others talking about an outfit there in florida called Foss Foam or some such. I'd go the the archives and type replacement or broken rudder in a search. Tell your friend to take one last good look at his money, it ain't cheap. The one for my 25 cost about $700. Check out Good Old Boat

The links section has a link to the Good Old Boat magazine website. That site has links for owner's associations, etc for hundreds of boats, including the Oday Tempest. When I was considering buying a Tempest a few years ago, I emailed the guy listed on the Good Old Boat site as the Tempest contact. I seem to remember him telling me that he lost his rudder and had to make a new one. Good luck.

Best Fit...

First you need to find the shaft diameter and length. As well as angle of the shaft vs. verticle. Then you need to come up with a wish depth list from the bottom of the boat to the end of the rudder. Take several pictures of the profile of the boat and the top of rudder tube where the rudder cap and tiller straps would mount to. You might find that with the proper shaft length and thickness, you can retrofit other models rudder molds to your tempest. Like maybe the old oday 27 or a pearson 26 rudder? It may end up costing a few extra bucks, but it's better than onwing an extra above ground swimming pool with cabin in the back yard. I almost bought a tempest last year. (then I would have had the rudder to build a mold for you with it.) With the above info, i'm sure rudy or anyone that has several rudder molds could find one that fits the shaft and depth.
