Hi ! First off, I did read the instructions re: not posting articles about your own boat, however Phil Herring thought I may get some good advice from you here. I need help ! When I was 16, I bought a Norwegian Folk Boat (sail), and began restoring it...of course when I was 16, I knew everything and required no help. Now, after attending university, getting married, having children...I am bringing this 1/2 renovated boat out of storage after 15 years ! Being older and hopefully wiser, I realize I have no idea where to go from here and I am looking for some advice ! Here's the dilemma: * The boat hasn't touched water for a good 40 years. * all old paint is removed * it has a 3/4 metal keel which I envision falling off once she gets launched !! * do I put her in the lake (Bay of Quinte - Lake Ontario) on the trailer and let her swell ? * for how long ? * or do I fill her from the inside and let her swell first ? * when should I re-paint after this ? If anyone can pass this along and/or give me advice on where to go from here, I would greatly appreciate any & all help I can get ! Sincere thanks in advance ! I read about folkboats in a recent sailing article. I remembered checking the websight www.folkboat.com. Bet someone here can be of some assistance. GoodLuck

I have read stories of people in your situation who launch it but anchor it immediately in water not much deeper than the draft, say 6 inches more than the draft. It immediately starts both taking in and taking up water. Start bailing/pumping and keep bailing/pumping as needed, until the seepage is nil. Make sure you have a mud or sand bottom to sink the 6 inches down onto, thereby preventing it from sinking while she is soaking up. I have never tried this, but have read about it a few times.
