The Herreshoff New York 40. This was the end of the guilded age with it's huge yachts sailed by professional crew. The 'Fighting Forties' were designed to be helmed by owners and sailed with small crews. It was also one of the earliest 'racer cruisers' intended to have enough amenities for spending time onboard, between races.

Merilee, a local boat, has decks.

I do not like the finish on the wood below at all. Not my idea of a 'yacht' finish. More like cheap cabinetry purchased from Home Depot or Ikea.
As for those decks, they're great at anchor, at the dock or in a bay, but in any sort of sea, they'd be a real 'launching pad' for crew trying to go forward or aft.

@TomY have you been aboard her? I looked at Chip’s images of the interior and wonder what type of lighting is used in the boat. Appears that the lights are aimed at the white ceiling, reflecting lights back into the spaces.

My guess is you are seeing the reflection from a camera flash. Although, Frank Lloyd Wright didn't like direct lighting and often turned ceiling lights into the corners to light them up instead of the room. It was a very nice light that was both easy on the eyes and opened a room up.

@Will Gilmore Yes. We have a couple of F L Wright buildings in the local area.
My interest is in modifying the lighting in my boat. I have 2 of the 1970's overhead 5 1/4 " lights in the ceiling. Plan is to change the lighting. @LeslieTroyer has me looking at LED rope lighting to string along the trim areas. But there is still a need for reading light. It is a search. I liked the lighting in the images. It at least gives me a vision of what can be.

That is an era when sailboats had character. Of course that is just my opinion.
I grew up with Herrishoff as the ideal. I always thought Clark Mills designs had a lot of Herrishoff influence in them. Of course, from a certain cultural perspective, even the 60s-70s "Clorox Bottle" designs have character. I just don't know anyone from that culture. However, someone did draw their lines down on paper and decide they looked good enough to sell. AND, they were right. o_O

I'm a big fan of Sparkman and Stevens designs, which is obvious from my boat. However I have to disagree with you Will. I think the clorox bottle look is closer to more current designs.

I have yet to see anything "Herreshoff" that I don't like. I have a deep seated appreciation for the old days of wooden ships & iron men.

So, tell me more about what you are disagreeing with. It sounds more like we are in lockstep on this. I'm a big S&S fan too. :)

The only disagreement I have is that you stated that 60s-70s have "Clorox bottle" designs. Again that is my opinion. I personally think the more modern designs are kind of like "Tylenol Capsules".
I am also a huge fan of "Herreshoff ".
In the 80s I did pulpit, stanchion, and other SS work for the "Cherubini 44". To me that craft was a work of art.:)
