It depends

If you are experienced and reasonable, you certainly could sail a 19 ft boat in the Bay Area, but you would have to be careful, avoid the slot on July afternoons, and head in when it starts getting really rough. The plus side: there is always some part of the Bay where you would be sailing happily along. It might be worth noting that the smallest keel boat most sailing clubs start students in is about 23 ft. And then when you look around, you'll see lots of sailboards and high performance small craft. The captains all seem young, happy and wet. If you want to stay dry, bigger is better as it would be a challenge. Good luck, S.

San Francisco...

Sorry for my blanket "bay" area statement, San Francisco area is where I was talking about :)

bayworthy Boat

Jennifer The size of the boat itself does not determine seaworthiness. Other factors are involved. 1. Is the boat a Keel Boat and I dont mean a retractable Keel or one of those water ballast deals. 2 Does the boat have a self bailing cockpit. 3. Do you have the experience to reef down and continue on if it breezes up and get rough If you answered yes to the above 3 questions you can sail the boat in any bay or coastal area. Not offshore: Thats another category. Bob Fox 1975 P26W #76 Whitecap Marblehead MA
