He said that there was no problem with swing room, so put out as much scope as you can.At least that is how I figured it as the scope was not a 5 to 1 or 7 to 1 (roughly 8 to 1). Regards.BruceNeon Moon
Since the Depth sounder is unadjusted you add the 2 ft to it's current reading for 17ft current depth then add your freeboard height of 4ft and expected tide rise of 5 to give you 26ft at 7:1 that's 182' of rode
Water depth, + transducer offset + bow height + tide rise, all times 7.It's the same math I do every time I anchor, except my transducer offset is already programmed into the repeater.
...but if the world anchored at 7:1 we sure should!I've never anchored at 7:1 because I've never had that much swing room, but then I'm always in mud/clay with a plow anchor. Heck, in our NW bottoms with a Bruce, 3.5:1 is plenty. You talk to guys who routinely anchor in sand with Danforths and they swear by 7:1.
I 've only sailed in the Pacific Northwest, ... but have never had the occasion to anchor at 7:1. Seems excessive and a waste of space....surely 5:1 is more than adequate with an appropriate chain to rope rode.
The 7:1 figure used in the quiz is an ASA recommended ratio, and I've yet to see a sailing text that doesn't say the same. like I said, i've never used 7:1 but a lot people won't use less.
We have fine twine tied into our anchor rope every ten feet. And yes as it hits the bottom we multiply the number of markers that have gone down and multipy by 5 and by 7-8 if she is blowing. Every time.
