Yesterday I went out with my motor on my 170 for the first time. I purchased a Tohatsu 3.5 hp motor and it weighs only 29lbs. When I put it in forward, I thought the motor mount was going to be pulled right out from the boat and I was at idle speed. When I increased power it pulled back worse, so I cut power back to idle. I looked in the archives, but couldn't find information about the mount. Is this normal? What experience has anyone else had with their motor mount? Has anyone reenforced their mount?

Motor Mount

I have a 3.3 Mercury on my 2001 H170. It weighs 25lbs. The mount from the flat part of the back of the boat is a well made, reinforced pice of metal with a thick, upright, plastic block that the motor is mounted onto... This came stock with the boat. Is this what you have? Mine is seriously strong and I'm at a loss to think why yours is flexing or "pulling out". Can you move the motor mount with just your hands? It shouldn't. When I sail without a motor, and go swimming, I routinely pull myself back in the boat using the motor mount. When I engage my engine from neutral to forward, there is little to no flex. Only thing else I can think of is that you may have backed into something and weakened the attachment of the mount to the boat. Or else the prop is badly out of balance (or broken)and is vibrating the whole engine and mount? Can you give any other info on what it is doing? Keep us posted and best of luck.

What is the maximum weight recommended?

I have a Hunter 146 with the same motor mount as the H 170. Is there a recommended maximum weight capacity for this mount? If so, does anyone know what it is? Jim Hunter 146 TIKI

170 w/3.5 Nissan

I have been using a Nissan 3.5B without any noticeable problems aside from vibration. I would recommend contacting Hunter Marine directly. They have been very responsive and helpful when I have questions.
