Dottie and I got to spend 15 days on Lake Powell the end of September and the beginning of October.

Back in September/October of 2009 Ruth and I had tried to sail the length of Lake Powell (about 145 miles). The goal was to only sail, no motoring or motor-sailing, the entire distance. At the end of the day sailing we would mark our position with the GPS and motor if necessary to an anchorage or a place where we could beach the boat for the night. The next morning we would return to our GPS way-point and continue sailing towards the end of the lake at Hite.

Ruth and I were on the water for 18 days and made it to Halls Crossing/Bullfrog about 95 miles up the lake and the only place you can take out after leaving the Page area. We were delayed by weather on some days and I also was injured at one point and sustained a small fracture at the top of my shoulder and 3 of the 4 muscles that make up the rotator cuff were screwed up and the ligament at the top of my shoulder was torn. After the injury we did make it under sail only to Halls Crossing, but quit there. You can find that trip report with the link at the bottom of this post.

For some time my goal had been to finish the last 50 miles of that trip, but Ruth and I went on to other trips and eventually I lost her when she passed in 2014. I was then blessed a second time when Dottie came into my life and also enjoyed the idea of sailing. We took a wonderful trip with the boat to Flaming Gorge in Wyoming in 2016 and then planed this trip for Sept./Oct. Of 2017.

This fall we were able to achieve my dream of sailing the length of Lake Powell by sailing from Halls Crossing to Hite at the end of the lake. Overall we had great weather and some beautiful days on the water and ....

... Some nice hikes off the water.

The scenery was great. If you have a sailboat, forget all the stories you have heard about how hard it is to sail on Lake Powell. Take that boat there and even if you motor more than sail, I'll guarantee you won't forget the experience. You will find lots more pictures and the trip log here ....

I was going to ask about the winds in the narrow canyon areas until I read that. My local lake has an area with bluffs and fickle winds that make sailing difficult.
It's great to read good sailing stories!

Thanks for sharing. Remember the earlier posts. The pics and sailing grounds are amazing. Very different from what I am accustomed!

Beautiful pics and story, Sum. My wife and I launched our 18' sailboat at Bullfrog in the 80's for a three day outing with another couple. At night, we pitched a tent on shore. I'm probably one of the bad guys that said sailboats don't belong on that lake, but I'm still having fond memories of the adventure.

There is a trailer sailing group in San Diego that have made numerous trips to Lake Powell and you also can find trip reports on the internet from different pocket cruisers. We have friends from Idaho that also have a boat in the yard our Endeavour is in in Florida and they said they have made numerous trips to Lake Powell over the years with friends that also have trailer sailboats. Walt on here has also been to Powell and has some great trip reports. You can find his ( analogengineering.com/sail/powell/ ) on the following link along with others ....

Again I'd recommend the experience to anyone that has a boat that they can take there,
