135 or 150 genoa?

I have a C25 tall rig that I've sailed for about 6 years. My sails are shot and should be; they're 25 years old. I've done some racing, moderately successfully (even with bedsheets for sails), but am mostly a cruiser. I'm buying new sails this season, most likely the Ullman sails made through Catalina Direct. My question is this, does anyone have any opinions on a 135 genoa as opposed to a 150? I've always used a 150 on a furler. However, my boat sails noticeably better with the 110 (I use it when wind conditions are higher). The 150 I have is too old to have luff foam for good sailing while furled. It's also hard to rate how well the 150 really works, since it's so ragged out. It struck me that perhaps the 135 would be a better choice (with luff foam): less sail to furl to get it down near a 110 for higher wind situations, so perhaps better sail shape in those conditions. Also, perhaps a better sail when all the way out...often the 150 just seems like more than necessary and overpowers sooner than I think it should...again, I don't really know because the sail is pretty taxed. I'm not a big racer, so getting every tiny bit of sail area isn't crucial, plus it's a tall rig, so I'm already getting bonus sail area anyway. However, I know the 150 is most common on these boats and maybe there's a reason for that besides eeking out every ounce of sail area possible. I could really use some opinions from anyone who's used the 135 or used both...thanks!! Eric

I'd opt for the 135, but try the C25

Association website forum, they've had this discussion recently and are specialists on your boat.

I have used both......

Altho I sail a Catalina 27 I believe both boats have a lot in common. The 150 was a "deck sweeper",.... the 135 is easier to tack and easier to see around. I don't miss the extra sail so for me the 135 was a better choice. If I sail in under 5 knots of wind I would wish to have the 150 but those days are seldom. We all do slightly different types of sailing so we all have slightly different needs. But if your like me, sailing the bay on days off with no place to be, the 135 {in my opinion} gives me greater control and a happier crew. good luck, Jack

I have a C320 with the 150, I'm moving to the 135 because I spend so much time with the big one furled. I don't race never been interested. In low wind I can use a cruising spinnaker. When the boat heels less you can actually get a little more speed out of it and a lot more comfort for the crew

I bought a main and genny from CD and Ullman.......

last year and the service and product were fantastic. I also had Ullman sails on our IP 38. The 135 with the foam luff is a perfect furling size for your boat. It will reduce to about 110 to 100% with good shape. Below that it's time to reef the main and roll the genny back out. A asymetric spinnacker is a better option than the 150. I have a 1.5 oz for the bigger wind days and it works better than the 150 in lower winds. Both my boats have/had fully batten, loose footed mains and that is the only way to go. Ullmans battens and batten pockets are a work of art. We bought the up-graded sails but not the top of the line and that woould be the way I'd go in the future. Ray

When I got new sails on my C25 a few years ago, I opted for the 150. If you need the extra sail you have it, if you don't need it, furl it.

My 135 has not been out of the bag for 2 years, I prefer to have more than I need and roll it in, than to wish I could get more sail out on a light day. I also just cruise with this boat so that probably is a consideration on which one you might decide on.

I agree with 135

I go with the 135. I feel it is the best all around for cruising. I have 130 and a cruising spinnaker. They are both made by Rolly Tasker. They were about $600 each for my 22 foot boat. Bought the 130 from local dealer and the cruising spinnaker from The Sail Warehouse.
