I'm looking to re-wire my Mac 26s. I am not sure of what I need. I was hoping to get a battery switch and 12v dc panel. I'll add a volt meter later. Check the link below and tell me if this is overkill. I want to keep it as simple as possible cuz I know almost nothing about electrical. I hope to eventually add shore power and a battery charger down the road. http://www.sailnet.com/store/item.cfm?pid=28975

Switchboard

Look at Ebay item 4537789476. Much less money and will probably be all you need. Your local auto parts has a battery isolation switch, which if you only have one battery is sufficient. You can find small LED voltmeters on Ebay as well. Good luck John S

bad 12v panel?

The panel recomended on ebay looks similar to this one I found online at West Marine. (check link below and read the reviews on the panel). It sounds like a real piece of crap. Has anyone used either of these panels before? I keep reading that you get what you pay for with these things. http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=10001&classNum=348&subdeptNum=118&storeNum=9&productId=59944

It's way overkill!

The wiring to carry 400 amps would be about 1 inch in diameter, and would take some huge batteries. I would suggest to buy "Sailboat Electrics Simplified" by Casey. Used on Amazon is less than $12. While you are waiting for the book, sit down and list all the things you want to power up. Make two list, on for 120VAC and one for 12VDC. (Do not forget the motor starter, if there is one.) This will be you baseline as you learn. Happy sails, Ron Ron

Panel Problems

Geez, that panel sounds like a piece of junk. The Ebay panel, while it is sold from Canada, may be just as bad, mine arrives in two days. The ebay panel also uses resettable circuit breakers instead of fuses. I planned to install LEDs in the switch lighting anyway. John S

Not Bad

Chad, I've installed a very similar panel from West Marine, and it has been working great for the last 2 years. Mine has three illuminated switches, 12V outlet, and the battery voltage gauge. Part #55344WM. Bruce

Good Idea

Chad, Ron has right opinion. This 12 Volt box may be somewhat overkill. You will have to run heavy cables from batteries to battery switch. Depending upon location of this box, this by itself will be quite a chore fishing the heavy 00 cable thru your hull. I placed seperate switch inside battery box. Probably a 12Volt 100 Amp 4-6 toggle panel box will operate the interior cabin equipment you want to power. I have not done this as I have three plug in type 12 volt receptacles and "Y" adapters and this seems adequate to run most TVs, CD player, Fans, lights, light cigarettes, etc, while at anchor. I did install 110Volt 30 amp shorepower to my Mac 26X 1997. Cost me about $2-300.00 I got 110volt shorepower panel box 4 toggle, Plug at end of transom, cable at West Marine. Wiring (#10 3wire) came out of my barn off old RV cord that is weather resistant and duplexes and boxes and other items came from Home Depot. All works great! Oh yes, I also carry a 1000 watt Honda generator for anchoring. Looking at buying Air Conditioner, portable to use in forward hatch. Hope this gives you some ideas. Ray
