12v DC or Inverter for LCD TV

I just bought a Sharp Aquos 13" LCD TV. I would like to use it while at anchor as well as at the marina. The normal power is 110 v AC, it goes to a power adaptor and into the TV at 12v DC. The TV 12v plug is a special one (square with several pins). I called SHARP customer service and they said that they don't offer a cigarrette lighter/12v adaptor or cable, and said it is not recomended for vehicle use since the voltage is not regulated and can cause spikes that will shut down the TV. After 8 of shuch automatic shutdowns the unit will not repower and will need to be serviced. Has anybody rigged a 12v DC adaptor or used an inverter (the ones you plug in the cigarrette lighter and can be bought at Best Buy or Circuit City to power TV's, video ganes, etc. in cars). Maybe one with a voltage regulator? Thanks in advance Ozana Halik

Same question for Samsung LCD

I've installed a Samsung 15" LCD and have wondered the same thing. The AC to DC power converter that came with the unit indicates 13 volts. I'd also like to be able to supply DC power. Any help is greatly appreciated. jerry.keto@opg.com

I use an inverter

I use an inverter, bought it in Sams club, plugs into a lighter or hard wire to battery. I use it for a 12" tv and videogame when the kids are on board. Never had any problems although I do not have an LCD tv

Use an inverter

Get one of those small 175 watt ones that plug into the cigarete lighter socket. $40 at West Marine, probably less elsewhere. Plnet big enough to run a TV or computer. The main advantage of using an inverter to supply 120 volt to your TV is steadiness. As long as the battery voltage is above a certain level, the inverter will pyut out steady 120 volt. When the battery level gets too low, it just quits. On the other hand, if you run the TV from the 12 volt outlet, the picture will shrink as battery voltage declines.

Jerry, I'd use

an inverter. I have a Samsung 171MP and tried to connect 12V from the battery. I found that the power level was not constant and that the monitor kept shutting off. I am using an inverter or genset since I think the transformer can handle fluctuating 110V and still provide the right 13V to the monitor.

Try it

"After 8 of such automatic shutdowns the unit will not repower and will need to be serviced." Why not try the "pocket" inverter-type once? If it doesn't work, you've still got 7 lives left on the TV.
