Is a 12000 BTU air system enough for a h30 in the deep south? I only have a 20 amp breaker and would have to get my own meter if I go to 16k but I will if I must in order to be COOL. Thanks, Steve

Cool in LA

I think I have a 15000 BTU unit in my H31. Its very cool at night, but sometimes has difficulty keeping-up in the Summer months. I usually don't use it during the day, as the hatches are open. I'm located in the ICW near Orange Beach, AL.

water temp

Air conditioner sizing is a function of ambient heat loss_ in this case the majority of loss is to the water. The hull of a boat is thin at the bilge, which is where the conditioned air tends to go. Dense fiberglass resin is not that great of insulator- you will always regain heat from this surface. A 1 ton unit may work great on a 30' located in 60 degree water on the east coast - but could be a problem in gulf areas with warmer water temperatures.

12000 btu air conditioner

Steve, I have a H33.5 in which I installed a 16000 btu Ocean Marine reverse cycle air conditioner and heater. The unit cools adequately. Maker sure that you have the main duct discharge into the salon and an accessory duct routed to the V berth area. If the return air vent is located aft, you should get good circulation and cooling throughout the entire boat. I would definitely go to the 16000 btu unit. If the 12000 btu unit doesn't cool sufficiently you are going to regret not spending the small increased amount for the bigger unit.

12K ok

Hi, I have been checking this issue for sometime. I have a 91 30T and everyone is telling me 12K will work just fine. My boat is in Dallas Tx. I'm having a Mermaid 12K installed this month. Jim

12000 btu ok for me

Although our water in Virginia may be cooler than the Gulf, I find that a 12,000 btu is adequate for my needs. Couldn't spend the time I do on the boat in the humid summer without it!
