(http://www.breitbart.com/news/2006/02/03/D8FHMPF89.html) Two questions: 1) how did they not get off an SOS or mayday call but still had time to deploy 5 life boats? 2) From the picture, I can only see 5 lifeboats...maybe they have another 5 on the other side. Either these boats are suppose to carry a lot more then 20 people per boat or this ship was grossly unsafe. I'm thinking it was a combination of both, but the people on the boats were greedy and only cared about their lives and didn't want to let people on board. Thoughts?

behavioral stratigies,

from bug's to people, are dependent on the conditions...scarce resources (lifeboats in this case), in general, bring out unsettling behavior's.

Sandstorm

Sandstorms are highly unsettling. They depress radio signals and seriously hamper visibility. The ship was fairly new and reportedly well maintained. Lets wait until all the information is in before commenting on it.

Maybe it rolled rapidly

to one side and sank rapidly. That would explain the few survivors and only five life boats. That is my completely uninformed opinion so please do not sue me for it.

Too soon to say just yet

Perhaps the ship rolled over very quickly with no time to get off a distress call and the boats we see were not launched but broke away. I'm not a naval architect but from the pics it looks like a very big mod was done. The large section above the weather decks does not fit the rest of the design of the ship. Looks very top heavy. Probably overloaded too. Very common in that part of the world.

Dangerous Seas

Some accidents at sea are unavoidable, this is a reminder to pay attention, I'll be watching to see the cause. Double, triple checking the safety features on my boat before going out.

1200 die

even professionals act stupidly in panic situations. the capacities painted on the titanic's lifeboats were based on how much fresh water the boats carried to sustain the survivors for an estimated seven days. so, in dead calm seas and with help on the way, instead of loading the wooden boats to the gunwales with people, they just went by the unquestioned painted numbers and made history. probably not a soul need have perished.

I don't think so

ct skip... Now that's hilarious. There you go again, blaming "god" for all your problems. Pat Roberts would probably say, "Must have been a gay cruise ship, you know god hates gays!"

Tragedy was in the making for many years

Let's see. This was a basic roll-on roll-off ferry from 35 years ago, upon which the made a modification to add several decks for passengers, by engineers in a third world country given an impossibly tiny budget and no safety oversight. Think, "ridiculously top heavy" Possibly the 5 life rafts we see, with 5 more on the other side, were the originals before the modification. If this was the USA, the would have added additional life rafts packed into roll off containers, but they would only have been deployable if the boat sank slowly. Even if the additional life rafts were there on those roll off containers, that may not have helped. Possibly the boat went down fast, due to being top heavy and any initial water that got below decks, sloshed back and forth enough to force open the doors the vehicles used to roll in/out. Not surprised the SOS was not heard from shore. There could have been many obstacles to getting a message out, and maybe they only used VHF with a range of 30 miles (they were 40 miles from shore). Maybe we will find in the months ahead, that the whole thing was safe, and either a freak of nature or human error was made. But, I would be hard pressed to believe that towering high ship was safe.

Help refused

No one picked up on the offer of airborne spotting and assistance from the US that was turned down? Correct me if I am wrong but the containerized life rafts that are common on commercial ships all have hydrostatic release devices (in addition to manual) that allow for release independant of the speed of the vessel going down.

All brought about by third world ignorance.

Bet you won't hear this muslim country blaming it on god. They'll snuff out the reason that this happened.
