110v into boat

I have 30amp AC plug coming into transom, wiring goes to the battery charger. As it is connected to the charger it's splits and feeds 3 110 outlets. Question should there be a breaker insider the boat before the charger and outlets? There is a 20amp breaker in box outside where I pickup 110v plug.

I would strongly advise a circuit breaker, you can't go wrong. If you don't actually need 20 amps, I would use a 15 amp, again, just for safety.

I don't know specifically where in your boat but you want it as close to the AC plug as you reasonably can.

Yes, there should be a breaker on the boat. ABYC says it should be within 10 feet (along the length of the wire) from the inlet. If there aren’t any breakers then what you add should be sized based on the wiring for the circuits - probably 15 or 20 A

I installed my 30 amp plug in the fuel compartment which is near the battery in the stern bunk on my H240. I wired to a duplex receptacle. the battery charger is plugged into the receptacle along with a 20 amp power strip with switch and breaker. The power areuo was expensive compared to the standard 15 amp but I wanted to be able to run an electric heater in the winter. The breaker is always sized to protect the distribution wiring (15 amp = 14 awg at 120 vac, 20 amp = 12 awg at 120 vac). The fuel compartment is the only place protected from the weather and properly vented to provide a full time electrical connection. I do though have a propane outboard. No gasoline on the boat. The "Locker" is open through the transom.Fuel Compartment Transom Opening.jpg

I previously owned a (1996) H26. Here are pictures of the 110vac components. The distribution/breaker panel was installed just right of the stove. The shore power receptacle was installed in the port side lazerette. I believe that all of this was factory install. I believe that the other cabin receptacles were all connected through the GFI that you see below the distribution panel.

DO NOT HOOK UP YOUR SHORE POWER CHORD IN THE FUEL LOCKER BECAUSE IT WILL CAUSE AN EXPLOSION AND/OR FIRE. You will need to move it to another location and cover the hole up if vented to inside of boat. I have seen the aftermath with one death as a result.

After scrolling back a bit I did notice that Pat has switched out to a propane outboard and he has two 11 pound tanks in the fuel locker that is well vented , not gas tanks , though in my mind still a hazard waiting to happen …

For what it’s worth, here’s an excerpt from Nigel Calder on wire nuts:

“Wire nuts are frequently used to make connections in household circuits in the United States, although not in Europe. They are not suitable for marine use since the threaded metal insert is made of steel and will rust; what is more, the lower end of the nut is open to the atmosphere. When used on stranded conductors, the threads on the insert can cut through the conductors, causing the nut to come loose and the connection to fail. If you do use wire nuts, always install them with the open end down so that the nut does not become a water trap. It is also a good practice to seal the nut with polyurethane sealant. However, it is a much better practice to “just say no” to wire nuts as they are specifically disallowed by the ABYC and ISO.”

If anyone has a photo of the port cockpit locker where my company installed the Shore power chord fitting at the aft end of the locker, please post it.
The shore power chord can fit between the lid and locker top

Normally on the trailerable Hunters, the fuel locker was on the starboard side of the cockpit

Correction sorry misread , my fuel locker is below helm seat shore power connection is on rear of starboard cockpit locker or lazarette

My response was for @patbratton on his 240

The fuel locker on the 26/260 is below helm if you lift up the rear or stern cockpit seat. My warning still applies to all fuel lockers regardless where it is at.
@rgranger Do you have that picture of the port locker 30amp service chord connection?
