Our H31 has a roller furler and we have these two head sails. My question is, what's the point in using the 110? Can't we achieve the same thing by using the 150 and partially furling it if we need to reduce sail?

Thanks.

Yes, you can always furl your 150. In sailing, nearly everything is a compromise. Furling a 150 or a 140, will produce alot of "noise" in the way of flapping. Use your 110 and reef your main to establish balance. You'll enjoy heavier weather sailing much more when you have learned how to balance your boat.

Which to fly depends on the average wind conditions in your home sailing grounds. In places were light winds predominate a 150 may provide better overall performance but needs to come with the understanding that when you furl a 150 you alter the sail shape and reduce efficiency. In places like the Caribbean where the trade winds blow consistently 15 to 20 knots the 110 may prove a better choice.

The furled 150 will not work as well as the 110, but a 150 on a roller furler is a good compromise. Can you fly the 150 unfurled very often? If not I might stick with the 110.

In the Chesapeake, with its light winds, the 150 is the best choice. IMHO

Thanks all. You've pretty much confirmed what I suspected. I've done a fair amount of racing (on other peoples' boats) and understand that sail shape=performance. And Ed is dead-on--summer winds on the Chesapeake can be unmercifully light. I'll probably swap out the 150 for the 110 in late September.
