Heading to the 1000 island 6/19/03 on our hunter H240. Leaving Alex bay going around hill island then slowly west to kinston around to cape vincent and back to alex bay (weather, a 4 year old and customs all being well). I just have a standard fluke anchor with a relick of a grapnel for backup (weapon). Any anchor better than another for this area? Any spots to beware of or be in ore of? I have all the charts and have read everything I can with some great website out there. All input appreciated to help make a safe and fun trip.

Great Cruising Area

I used to sail regularly to Kingston from Henderson Harbor. A neat little harbor just South of the entrance into the 1000 Islands. You might think about putting in there at the HH Yacht Club. Kingston is about a full days sail from there. I would some times overnight at Grenedier Island. Some of the islands on the Canadian side usually have moorings that you can pick up. Kingston Harbor,Ganonawhwe(sp) is dockage only but the rates are very reasonable. Both are neat and very pretty towns to visit. Kingston is right in the center of town and has showers, water, etc. If you decide to anchor in the islands you can usually find a spot off the main channels and in shallower water. My danforth always worked good with a lot of rode. But the anchorages can get crowded and I always worrried about the other boats dragging into me? I always looked for a small spot on the bottom that was clear of sea grass and tried to set my anchor into it. Be sure that it is set properly because the sea grass is not good holding in any kind of storm. Be sure to stay clear of the big freighters going thru, it can get real tight in the channels and they have right of way! Hope this helps- Don
