I have had to replace the raw water impeller twice in the past 8 months on our 1 GM. Both times the rubber blade structure unbonded from the center brass bushing. These were both new impellers from Yanmar. Someone said they heard there was a bad "batch" of impellers. Has anyone else had this experience? I am trying to contact Yanmar, but so far no response. Thanks.

Mack Boring

Did you purchase through Mack Boring? They're a distributer for Yanmar. If not, give them a call. The web site is www.mackboring.com it should have locations and phone numbers near you.

Have had the same problem

I had the same thing about a year ago. Mine had been in service two or three months, my dealer said that's just the way they sometimes go. I replaced it and the new one has been fine. But now I always keep two spares onboard.

faulty Yanmar impellers

Had exactly the same experience after about 6 weeks on the raw water pump impeller. Was able to successfully re-bond the rubber to the inner bushing with epoxy. . . . But I still would keep a spare on hand. Henry

Thanks to all responders

Found a local mechanic through Mack Boring that confirms that 1GM impellers marked with the "Johnson" name tend to go bad, but no one at Yanmar has answered my queries. The local also suggested that any blockage or backpressure in the cooling system could be a contributing factor to the failiures, so this weekend I am going to try flushing the engine, hoses and inspecting the thermostat. To Henry from Boca (small world - we used to live in Boca, until IBM decided the sun was to hot...) how did you epoxy the impeller, since I have two old ones now and they are $16 apiece I'd like to repair them as emergency spares. Thanks.

Yanmar Impeller

Had exactly the same experience as you did with the Yanmar impellers. I was replacing them every 40 hours on average. A Yanmar distributer told me that many of the impellers sold where defective. I keep two spare on hand at all times, just in case. I've had better luck this season although, got about 60 hours on this one. Maybe they fixed the problem.

impeller repair with epoxy

Barry I believe I used MarineTex applied with a q-tip to attach the rubber portion to the metal bushing or center part. Yes, know IBM only too well since I worked there at the Boca Lab from 1969 to 1986. May have been too hot for IBM but it continues to be a great place for sailing. Henry
