Looking for pros and cons on this type of engine. I may purchase a 27 Hunter (1982) with this inboard but I'm unfamiliar with it. Any and all imput will be appreciated. Thank you

I had one....

on an older hunter 30... Pros - relatively simple ingine, ran forever, couldn't kill it, probably used a quart of fuel an hour at full throttle, reliable - always started. Supposed to be able to hand crank start if batteries failed. I was never able to(for fun) batteries never failed so it always turned over. Cons - single cyl made it vibrate more than 2-3 cyls, actually broke a motor mount once, noisy- although you could probably try to add soundproofing materials to engine compartment. On the 30' it was OK when wind died and barely acceptable to motor against wind, chop, current. The 27' is probably 2000-3000 lbs. less displacement.

I own one now

I own a 2000 Hunter 270, which includes the Yanmar 1GM10 1-cylinder diesel. I have had no problems with it at all in terms of reliability and simplicity of servicing. While all diesels are noisy, I found the 1-cylinder no more noisy than a 3-cylinder Westerbeke diesel I owned on my old Ranger 33. I'm able to do 6.0 to 6.2 knots at full throttle.

Still own one

1978 vintage. Still starts and runs like a clock everytime. A good friend. Fuel "consumption" is an oxymoron. My engine box is soundproofed so noise is normal, vibration depends on RPM. Easy to maintain (which I suggest you do religiously) and service. Some patience required in obtaining some of the less often replaced parts, but they are still out there. Obviously not a powerhouse, but it will deliver hull speed. (Everyone else under power will pass you just as they will under sail...) Do have the engine checked thoroughly prior to purchase (just like the boat!). I'll be glad to give you the benefit of my accumulated wisdom with this engine if you do purchase...
