Well at last I found a product that does the job....Scrubbing Bubbles with Bleach ($1.99 at your grocer). I also went to my neighbors 3-5 year old h310 and knew that if it worked on his nasty rubber it would work on all. It worked!!! Left it on overnight...went back in the morning...one more scrub with the dish brush and Bubbles and..walla... the top of the rub rail was as gray as the side and bottom. Pictures coming soon!!! Thinking about repackaging the product for $9.99 per bottle as Lake Boy's Deluxe Hunter Rub Rail Cleaner...LOL :) later w

I hate to rain on your parade, Wally, but...

How many times have I said that bleach is highly destructive to rubber? The combination of UV and bleach is even worse...'cuz it accelerates "sun rot." Abrasives scratch it, which causes your rub rail to collect dirt faster...which means you'll scrub it with abrasive and bleach more often... However, there is a product that does seem to work without harm--and without much elbow grease...it just ain't cheap: Windex Outdoor. I tried it on some dirty fenders and the rubber edging on my dock, and was amazed at the results.

Hey Peggy!

I have read your advise for a long ti,e now and you COLOR ME IMPRESSED! lol I have not had the occassion to talk to you, I guess! Isn't the outdoor Windex strong ammonia? and doesn't ammonia kill the rubber too? Mike D

I dunno what's in Windex Outdoor...

And I don't have a bottle here to check. But I don't THINK there's amonia in it, 'cuz amonia would play hell with shrubbery. Several people on my dock are using it as a boat wash...and it works great--but not as good as C.U. when it comes to getting bird and spider poop. However, for a quick wash just to get salt, dust or pollen off, nothin' could be easier than sticking a bottle of it on the end of a hose and laying it down over the whole boat (don't dawdle, 'cuz you don't want it to dry)...then swap out the bottle for the hose nozzle--the "rinse" setting on the hose-end sprayer is waaay to wimpy--and rinse well, starting where you started before. That leaves it on the hull just long enough to soften up the dirt and float it free to blast off with the hose. The hose-end sprayer just happens to fit the 22 oz C.U. bottle...that works even better. :) Takes me about 20 minutes to wash my entire 32' boat...no bucket, no mop...just a scrub brush for the stubborn spots. Doing it this way is NOT a substitute for a good scrubbing when the boat really needs one...but it's sure a handy dandy way to give a quick once-over. I'll check on the ingredients in Windex Outdoor when I go to the grocery store.

Umbrella deployed for Peggy...

The way I look at it is that if you can clean the nasty thing with anything short of comet or sandpaper than it can't be too bad. The guy the dealer sent out to clean the boat wanted to use acetone and steel wool (LOL) because he couldn't find that anything else worked. I will try the Windex also if doesn't contain ammonia. I understand that ammonia will also desolve wax. I'm just trying to have some fun and share some ideas. I don't profess to be an expert so you can rain on my parade any day :) I'm just happy that I found something that would clean my rub rail, albeit only temporarily. later w

Some things shoujld only be used as a last resort

Soft Scrub with bleach is one of 'em (however, that does NOT apply to acetone, at least not on rub rails and fenders). Once a year prob'ly wont do enough damage to matter...just don't get carried away with idea that using it repeatedly will keep your rub rails snow white. While I was building Peal Products, I prob'ly tested 100 products every year..after the first couple of years I learned to ask what was in them first. :) And I learned that sometimes fenders, rub rails, mildew stains and other stains are just beyond help...but I had to damage a few things (fortunately only (ok..MOSTLY only) things that were already only one more try ahead of the dumpster) before I was willing to believe that. But what the heck...Post-It Notes and Silly Putty were invented by accident...so go ahead and experiment. As long as you can use it without wearing rubber gloves, you prob'ly can't do enough damage to matter just once. Just be careful.

Scrubbing Bubbles without Bleach...

Tried the product without bleach and it works just as well...still $1.99. By the way, Scrubbing Bubbles is not the same as Soft Scrub. Soft Scrub contains abrasives. Scrubbing bubbles does NOT contain abrasives according to the products label. Keep it clean... w
