whipping stays

Can anyone confirm or deny the need to whip the mast head stays above and below the spreaders on a 1983 Hunter 22? As long as I've owned the boat the side mast head stays have run freely through the spreader ends. But I've been recently told that these should be whipped tightly above and below...
