head flush

Dear Fellow Sailors, I have a new-to-me boat with a full head and holding tank. Not sure if I need to add water anywhere. It wasn’t flushing well so I added water to the head right in the bowl and it flushed well. Any wisdom on where I may place water for flushing similar to a house toilet...
