Rocna Anchor

Thinking of making the jump from a Danforth to a Rocna Anchor. Anyone have a new design and can attest to if a 9lb or 13lb will fit in the anchor locker? I currently do not have an anchor roller. (bought one years ago from Catalina Direct but haven't gotten around to installing it). Maybe I have to? Thanks

Is there a specific reason you are wishing to change anchor styles? CD's anchor roller will not "stow" the Rocna anchor but if it fits in the locker, you should be able to haul the anchor up to the bow and then place it in the locker for storage.

The CD anchor roller for the C-22 is designed to stow an 8 lb. Danforth anchor. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the roller will work with my new Fortress FX-7 as it has a longer flukes and shank than the Danforth which came with Waffle House. I won't know for sure if I can stow the new anchor on the roller or, if I need to hang it off of the pulpit. Time and weather will tell.

Edit: after posting the above I did check online and the FX’s fluke length is 1 3/4 “ longer on the FX-7 but most importantly, the shank length is the same 24” so, I “hope” and believe that I am golden.

Are you having anchorage issues with your current set up? Would adding additional chain or line to your rode accomplish what you are seeking with an anchor upgrade?

My Danforth doesn't seem to want to reset well when the tide changes here in sf bay as much as I would like. Also planning to go to the San Juan islands in may and wanted a better anchor setup. I'll still have a Danforth with me as a secondary anchor but wanted the Rocna as a primary if I can figure out the storage.

No trip line. Anchored in SF Bay mud for almost two decades.

Whenever I hear the phrase "bear to break free" I always think "So, what's wrong with that?" Seriously, consider the alternatives. In any event, after 18 years of anchoring in SF and 10 more years here in BC, I have always been able to pull my anchor up BY HAND, no windlass. Technique in anchoring AND anchor retrieval is important. Bring the boat OVER the anchor and it will almost always break free by pulling by hand. Almost always means in all that time I have twice had to motor forward to pop it loose. Twice. This is NOT an issue.

A trip line adds unnecessary complexity, Unless you are knowingly anchoring in rocks and rubble, you shouldn't even consider it.

Stu,
Do you use a trip line on your anchor? I understand that Rocna anchors can be a bear to break free in mud.

I have no experience with Rocna, but I doubt it (or any properly sized new generation anchor) will fit in the locker. Nor will the CD anchor roller carry any style anchor sized appropriately for a place like SF bay, in my opinion. I tried.

I went down this road with Mantus, nine years ago. I had to settle for a 13lb model. I wanted 17, but there was simply no way. Happily, the #13 has been 100% effective.

The only way I found to mount a "real" anchor on the bow was to buy this anchor roller from CD and modify it to fit. Even then, I had to cut out a small section of the anchor locker hatch so it could close over the anchor shank.

It was all a monstrous pain in the butt, expensive and time consuming. It was also the single best thing I ever did to make Daydream a better boat.

Understood and, considering your pending trip to the San Juan Islands, this adds context to your initial question. All of my anchoring has been on land locked lakes and as river fed, generally mud bottoms to boot. I think the length of the rode coupled with the length of initial chain play a significant role in both holding and reset capabilities. Whichever anchor you choose as your primary, I think you have a lot of anchors to choose from.

For what it’s worth, in a past life I did not have any chain on the rode but, I always had sufficient scope to ensure that I would reset with if the wind changed. I only recall one instance where my anchor dragged and I needed to actively reset for the deteriorating conditions.

+1 to everything @Gene Neill said above. I ended up with a similar system - in my case, a 15-lb Manson Supreme on a Lewmar roller. Agreed that it was a substantial project, and a very worthwhile one.

If it helps, there's a side-view picture here, with the A-frame bowsprit mounted.

No, No, No to the San Juans - everyone should stay away and leave it all for us :) Just kidding - very highly recommended! We've been really happy with the new-design anchor in the SJ conditions - I'm sure a Rocna or Mantus would perform similarly to our Manson.

Ensure your ground-tackle system includes plenty of rode to handle the large tidal swings. And sometimes even larger farther south in the Salish Sea, if you end up heading that direction.
