Doesn't seem like it should be this hard... Just wanna know the year and model and find the manual for it.

Can't seem to look up or find the info on a Mercuty outboard engine with serial 1R266803. Also have the model number of 1F05221KK.

Believe its a 5 or 6 hp. 4 stroke. It was purchased new in 05.20.24.

I'm just trying to find the manual for this motor so I can help a friend get it running again.

Thanks!

This is a mystery as to why a manual doesn’t exist for this outboard. I’m not sure if this can help, in your other posting you asked for any info or diagrams to help you understand whats going on in there.
I have a much older Mercury Manual from 1998-2002. I copied some of the pages from it that may help. Its a start.
Hope it does in some way.

Based on the year and that it's a 4 stroke, the motor would definitely have been made by Tohatsu. The outer cowlings are different, but the motor itself is Tohatsu. And the Tohatsu/Mercury 4, 5, and 6 hp single cylinder all use exactly the same block, only the jets in the the carburetors were changed with the hp rating. I believe Nissan also uses (used?) the Tohatsu motors as well.

As far as I know, only Yamaha and Honda don't use the Tohatsu motor for their 4-6 hp outboards.

Gotcha. So it is normal that I cant find a manual based on the serial from the motor? OR are you saying I need to use a Tohatsu manual for my mercury?

I'm saying I have never in the position where I couldn't locate a manual. But many times I wasn't willing to pay the price for the manual, especially for items and manuals where online versions didn't exist. I am saying that for the motor itself, a Tohatsu manual will likely get you what need/want to know. The Mercury manual would be better for the externals - gear shift, tiller handle components, etc. Don't know whether the Tohatsu manual would apply to lower leg or not.

Using viable alternatives is how I got by when the factory manuals were too spendy. Examples include my 1960 MGA (in fact all cars prior to 2000), even my 2005 Honda 5hp outboard. When I was getting parts for the Honda, I went to the vendor's site, and ordered based on serial number ranges that were presented. This worked well. Similar for my 2005 Sears Craftsman lawn tractor, which was a rebranded Husquavana. While I have the Sears manual, none of the part numbers correspond in today's world. But by checking against Kohler (made the engine) and Husquavana parts, I can usually find the right one.

Mercury might not have bothered writing a service manual for a motor that is mostly rebranded, or assembled with parts bought from elsewhere - happens in the RV world all the time. I just don't know. I'm suggesting the Tohatsu manuals/info might have what you need.

Gotcha. Appreciate the info.

I've had bad luck with manuals. I've had 3 outboards in the last year that I needed to work on... and I have not been able to find a manual specifically for any of them. Thought maybe I am just dumb or confused... but think its just badluck now.

Is this normal or just me.

This one was purchased in 2024 said. I have searched using both of the numbers (1R266803. Also have the model number of 1F05221KK) and cant come up with anything. Am I doing it wrong or missing something here?
