My aft of mast Windex broke (not the Raymarine little windex with the anemometer). The tail fell off (bird landing?). Any info on replacement that will screw in with the same threads? Size suggestions? On Defender, I see a Davis Instruments WindTrak 15 Wind Indicator - 3150. Anybody know if this is compatible with the existing mount on my 2002 C320? There's also a Schaefer Hawk Apparent Wind Indicator but it's only 10" long, for boats up to eight meters (ours is more).

You need to know what brand your old one is if you want to use the same mount. Davis is pretty popular, but who knows how old yours is…20+ years old?

Otherwise, buy a complete new unit, and plan to install the mount…but if it fits the old mount…bonus!

When I got my 2002 C320 it had a Davis Windex mounted to the aft masthead and the VHF Ant. had been bent in a dogleg to accommodate the swing. Rebuilding the mast recently I replaced with a Davis but used an extended mount to allow for a straight antennae. The new models have a Dandy bird spike that really discourages avian loitering on your mast head.

Maybe breaking that neck breaker is a blessing if it forces you to pay more attention to your tell tales and your ensigns or pennants. When a seagull broke mine years ago I realized pretty quickly that I can sail pretty well without it... so I never replaced it. A few years later I upgraded my electronics and installed a wind transducer as part of the Nk2 .... The True wind info it provides is confidence building. Laylines, tacking angles, all facets of navigating the boat around a course or on a route enriched my sailing experience. Yes, I can switch the instrument over to apparent if needed, but I depend on the tell tales for trimming decisions so I'm on True 95% of the time. Anyway, not being critical, just saying don't let it cut down on your sailing. :)
