Beneteau 473 Head backing up in the toilet

Hello, I am new the forum. I have a electric head on the boat and I have the above water line holding tank backing up into the toilet. It takes some time for this to happen and assumed the joker value at the macerator was bad and replaced it. Still same issue. Replace the plastic elbow an tubing to the Y value and no help.

I was told by a friend yesterday that there are two joker value on his Beneteau (larger boat), one at the toilet and one higher up. I have replaced by holding tanks and all plumbing years ago and never noticed a second joker value. It makes sense to have 2 and the one further back to prevent this exact issue.

Can someone confirm that this boat does need two joker values?

Thanks for any help.

Wayne

Welcome Wayne.
First, this is a shameful pitch for an excellent book that helped me understand boat plumbing and getting rid of offensive smells.

I have not heard of two Joker valves being used on a system.
  • Which toilet are you using?
  • How does the effluent line run from the head to the tank?
  • Does it rise straight off and the effluent flows to the tank using gravity, or is it laid horizontally along the hull, then rises to the tank?
  • What brand of electric toilet was used in your boat?
  • Is the water from the incoming seacock, or is it effluent tainted back flowing from the holding tank?

Jabsco Electric head
The line goes from the head to a Y valve, then branches off either to the overboard thru hull or to the tank
Everything goes up, nothing is horizontal, holding tanks are way above water line
These are fresh water heads.

Typically the culprits for backflow are joker valve, crusted waste line, and clogged black tank vent line. Sounds like you've checked all but the vent line.

Jabsco makes the Electric 37010 Series and the Quiet Flush.
They only show one Joker valve at the toilet, part # 11. As far as I can tell, that is the same for both models.

If a second joker valve was installed, that is likely a PO modification. Being further away from the Head Pump, effluent materials could get stuck in the second valve and contribute to a failure (conjecture).

Yes, its a quiet flush. I replace everything years ago and don't remember if it had a second joke. I read the Raritan c256 joker valve was stronger and more reliable valve, so purchased one to try out to solve. Thank you. Wayne
