Hi all,

I had freezing damage to the intake water strainer on our 2008 Beneteau Oceanis 40 marine head. The marina found the problem last year while winterizing the boat.
They bypassed the strainer to winterize the system and sent me a couple of pictures from the strainer (attached). Because the hose barb is pretty corroded, they recommended changing it and suggested it would be best to replace the whole thing, including the through-hull fitting, the ball valve, and the hose barb.
The boat is 17 years old, and that assembly is still the original, so it's not a bad idea to change all of it.
When I was at the boat yesterday, I forgot to measure the through-hull fitting, and maybe someone here would know what diameter it is. I really appreciate that information.
Also, I never paid attention to the strainer, which was obviously the reason for the problem . Could somebody please identify that intake strainer? I am not sure what it was; they took it away and just left me with the pictures. I think it was a Jabso strainer similar to the one in the attached picture.
Thanks, appreciate all the help.
Christoph

The intake thru hull fittings on my boat are 3/4”. The galley & head discharge fittings are 1 1/4”. If you are not using “real” seacocks & are using the same type fittings as existing components, be sure to recommend to yard that Groco bronze fittings with BSPP threads are installed. The thru hull, valve, & tailpiece will all have same threads w/o mis matched threads as commonly used in US. Also, check in plumbing section of owners manual; the fittings & hose sizes may be detailed there. I would also have yard check all fittings & hoses. The quality of bronze fittings that Beneteau used in that time period is suspect. I have replaced mine with Groco bronze fittings over the years.

3/4" is the standard size for flush water intake plumbing and fittings...UNLESS the boat was built where metric sizes are standard (Beneteau is a prime example). If so, it may be necessary to replace the intake thru-hull, hoses and any fittings that are metric with those that use imperial measurements to be able to find new ones that fit in the US.

Thank you for your input, much appreciated.

I got concerned about other things as well, so I took the plunge and drove to the boat again. It's only 4:30 hours back and forth . Anyway, you're correct, it's a 3/4 in our boat too. The boat was built here in the US, so it is unlikely to be metric, and the plan is to change the through-hull fitting as well. I will go with Groco bronze fittings, ball valve, and so on. I could also identify the water pump, it's a Jabsco 31631-1092 3.8 GPM 12 Volt PAR-MAX-4, so I can get the appropriate strainer.
Thanks for your help
