Water ballast valve plate

This year on pulling the boat for the season , I had a growth of mussels on the bottom off the plate .
Hull just some slime . 7 months in and Intetlux MCS bottom paint .
None last year and I don't think I painted the valve .
My question what's the valve made of and do you guys paint it .?

Mine is stainless steel and I paint it.

Stainless steel for sure. Dennis, did you paint it with a primer first so the paint can adhere to the plate. Thanks

Ok thanks I thought it was . Moved marinas and never had mussels attach like that before.

Primer is a good idea but no i didn't use it. I use ablative paints and they're touched up every year or two anyway so I skipped that step.
