My starter has a serious case of rust. For reliability I want to replace it with a new one. I have seen elsewhere that the M-25 is really a Kubota tractor engine. Some have suggested that it is a Kubota D-850. But a search of the Kubota site yields no results for a D-850. Could they have updated the designation? And can someone tell me the new nomenclature for this engine? My local Kubota dealer is a bit mystified by my description and the D-850 thing.

Instead of ordering a new one, take the old one off and bring it into an alternator repair shop, they fix starters, too.

You can get a rebuilt one [M-25 starter] from Captain's Locker in Long Beach for $225 + core, so I've been told. They might be able to answer your question about the manufacturer, etc.

Incidentally, I'm picking up my rebuilt Hitachi starter for the Yanmar 3JH3E today for more than 25% less than that (above). So, taking yours to a local rebuild shop might be the ticket.

Most Kb dealers know only Kb part numbers, or the product it goes onto (tractor, etc.) They don't go by Kb engine block numbers, or Universal serial numbers.
