Severe rattle coming from the transmission area (I think)

I was doing some maintenance for an unrelated item and I cleared out the aft berth of my 310. I opened up all the compartments to inspect and clean the strainer. I started the engine and there was this extremely loud rattle. I am hearing from friends and other boat owners everything from, theres something loose or it could be the springs in the transmission pressure plate. Does anyone have any experience with this? Trying to get a mechanic to come out to the boat, but weather and his schedule is making it tough.

Yes indeed have experience.

It could be something loose or the pressure plate is shot. ‍

Can’t you tell more from that with the info given.

Lots of things can and do make rattling noises around a Diesel engine.

Does it rattle in neutral? When in gear? Can you put it in gear?
