S2 Project Boat Hull Number

I'm looking at a project boat (wife wants to shoot me I think but gave me the go ahead) and it's a '75 S2 26 mid.

The HIN is SSU 27040 M75J. I've read that the first 2 digits of the serial number (27040) in an S2 is the model number. If this holds true then the 27 should designate a 27' not a 26' boat, yet it says clearly on the side S2 26. I know they went to the 8.0 designation (an 80 where the 27 is in serial #) for this boat not long after this boat was built. Enough history, so is the 27 the center cockpit variant of the 26? I understand every other number and letter so no need to explain them.

I'm thinking S2 made a mistake with the length on the hull ID or you or someone misread it. Put a piece of paper over it and go over with a pencil. I think (pretty sure) the only center cockpits were the 26/30/35/36. The 26 cc were only made in 1975 and only 40 were built. You would have the last one...i think the 27s came out some ten yrs later...and only aft cockpit
